Physical Therapist Assistant Educational Equivalency Review (PTA-EER)

Important: Some jurisdictions do not accept evaluations using the PTA Coursework Tool. Prior to applying for PTA-EER, be sure to contact the jurisdiction(s) where you are seeking PTA licensure to ensure that they will accept the PTA-EER evaluation report.

The PTA-EER is an evaluation that determines whether the applicant’s education is substantially equivalent to that of a graduate of a U.S. physical therapist assistant (PTA) program that has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

  • To ensure accuracy and fairness, FCCPT uses the Physical Therapist Assistant Coursework Evaluation Tool (PTA CWT 2007), which has been validated against the CAPTE criteria for PTA education. Please note that evaluation criteria for PTA licensure is different than criteria for PT education. Completion of PT education does not guarantee equivalency on the PTA-EER.

What does the PTA-EER include?

A course-by-course evaluation of the educational records provided by the applicant’s educational institution(s) compared to the educational requirements for a PTA degree in the U.S.

Who should apply for the PTA-EER?

Important: You should not apply for the PTA-EER if:

  • You are not a graduate of a physical therapy education program, holding a diploma as either a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant; or
  • You are a PT applicant who did not meet the Educational Credentials Review criteria for educational equivalency.  You should not consider the PTA-EER as an automatic next step.
    • The PTA-EER is not a shorter or simplified version of the Educational Credentials Review. It is a different review with different criteria.
  • You are a PTA applicant seeking a Health Care Worker Certificate for visa screening, refer to the Comprehensive Credentials Review (Type 1 Review) section of our website.
    • Note: The PTA-EER cannot be used by USCIS for immigration purposes. To be eligible for a Health Care Worker Certificate, you must have earned a professional healthcare degree. A PTA degree/certificate is not considered a professional healthcare degree, and therefore is not eligible for visa and immigration purposes.
  • If you are applying for a PTA license in New York State. Refer to the New York Credentials Verification service for details on applying for licensure in New York.
  • Before you apply - read the following important information

    What You MUST Do to Apply:

    • Complete the online application and pay for the PTA-EER.
    • You must select an Included Report within 30 days of application if you wish to have one additional report sent to a jurisdiction or other recipient free of charge. If no recipient is selected at the time of application (“None at This Time”), you can notify FCCPT of a recipient for the Included Report, at no additional cost by submitting the Included Report Request Form, for up to 30 days following the receipt of the application. 
      • If you request a report recipient AFTER 30 days from the receipt of the application, you will have to apply for a Duplicate Report and pay the associated fee. 
      • If you did not select a recipient for the Included Report, FCCPT will complete your evaluation on the most current Coursework Evaluation Tool (CWT). You will need to apply for a CWT Version Update if you choose later to have an evaluation sent to a state that accepts the tool based on your year of graduation.
    • Complete the applicant portion of the following academic request form and send it to all appropriate institutions (U.S. and foreign).
    • Complete and submit a signed and notarized PTA-EER Attestation form with one (1) recent passport-size photo (2 x 2” or 51 x 51 mm).
    • Submit a copy of your PT or PTA diploma(s), degree(s), and/or certificate(s) to FCCPT, which have been notarized as a true copy of the original.
      • Note: FCCPT will accept notarized copies of diplomas, degrees, and/or certificates from the issuing institution, if received with the Academic Credentials Verification form.
      • Note: FCCPT will accept PT education documents for the PTA evaluation.

    Additional steps you may need to complete:

    • If you want a third party (an authorized representative) to contact FCCPT on your behalf, you must submit a notarized Release of Information form.
    • If FCCPT sends you a request for translation, you must arrange for translation of the original language documents. See Foreign Language Documents for more information.

    What you should NOT do:

    • Do not send original diplomas or certificates. All documents sent to FCCPT become the property of FCCPT and will not be returned.
    • Do not send any copies of transcripts, mark sheets, syllabi, or license verifications to FCCPT. These documents must come directly from the issuing institutions.
    • Do not collect transcripts or verifications in sealed envelopes and forward these to FCCPT. These documents must come directly from the issuing institutions.
    • Do not send the Attestation forms and copies of diplomas to your schools and request the school send them with your academic documents. This will delay your process significantly. The Attestation form and your notarized copy of your PT or PTA diploma should be mailed directly to FCCPT by you (the applicant).

Academic Institution Do's and Don'ts

What academic institutions do:

  • Academic institutions must fill out page 2 of the Request for Academic Credentials Verification form and mail it with the complete, final transcript and, if required, the official detailed course descriptions and/or syllabi to FCCPT.
    • We will accept electronic transcripts from some U.S. institutions. Please see Submitting Documents for a current list of U.S. institutions that we will accept electronic transcripts from.
    • Note: Institutions that issue Marksheets (Statement of Marks) instead of a full transcript must submit both Marksheets and Transcript of Hours to count as a full transcript.
  • Academic institutions should provide documents in English if available.
    • If translations are not available, the academic institution should provide original language documents to FCCPT. See Foreign Language Documents for details.

What academic institutions should NOT do:

  • Academic institutions should not send any documents to the applicant to forward to FCCPT.
  • Academic institutions should not forward documents to a translator to forward to FCCPT.
  • Academic institutions should not forward the applicant's notarized Attestation form to FCCPT.

FCCPT Do's and Don'ts

What FCCPT does:

  • FCCPT collects and verifies all documents upon receipt.
    • FCCPT may contact academic institutions and/or licensing/registration agencies if further verification of documents is needed
    • If all documents are not received within twelve (12) months of the application date, FCCPT will close the service. Please see Reactivation section of the website for more information.
  • FCCPT sends original language documents to you (the applicant) once the documents are verified, with instructions for you to arrange for translations.
  • FCCPT will begin the review when all documents listed on the checklist are received and verified.
    • If additional documents arrive after the review begins, you must send a signed fax requesting to restart the current review. The fax must be received by FCCPT prior to the completion of the review. If you do not send a fax requesting to restart the review, FCCPT will complete the review with the documents received on or before the review start date and you must apply for Re-evaluation to add the new information to your evaluation report.
  • FCCPT completes the review and will issue a report to you and your selected jurisdiction(s) and/or requested recipient.
  • FCCPT issues evaluation reports via e-mail. The final reports are secure .pdf documents that can only be accessed by the applicant, jurisdiction, or recipient to whom the email was delivered.

What FCCPT does NOT do:

  • FCCPT does not request documents from the academic, licensing, or examining institutions on your behalf.
  • FCCPT does not issue a license.
    • The jurisdiction board is responsible for licensure.
  • FCCPT does not give out specific information to any third party without your notarized Release of Information.
  • FCCPT does not retain any documents received that are not required for your review.
